AlgaeBarn Celebrates The Worlds Oceans! by greg.chernoffWelcome to World Ocean Month! For the month of June, AlgaeBarn will be celebrating what unites us all in this hobby – the ocean! Throughout the month, we will be highlighting some of the ways we can all come together to improve the health of our oceans. In this hobby, it is not possible to separate ourselves from the ocean. Conservation and sustainability are two of AlgaeBarn’s most paramount goals. We are continuously motivated by the knowledge that the ocean is under constant threat. Pollution, overfishing, and climate change are just a few of the hazards natural coral reefs are facing. That is why AlgaeBarn is committed to doing everything we can to improve sustainable aquaculture practices. It is our greatest hope that someday we will see reef tanks proudly filled with 100% captive-bred and aquacultured species. But we know we can’t do it on our own! That is one of the reasons why we collaborate with other like-minded organizations. Companies like ARC Reef, Biota, and ORA all share the same common goal to improve the conditions of our natural coral reefs. We do know that only through collective action will we improve our relationship with the world’s oceans. Part of the reason why we work so hard to educate fellow hobbyists is that if we all do our part, we can make a positive impact. That is why for the month of June, we will be releasing new articles detailing the ways captive-breeding programs have improved the health of natural coral reefs. AlgaeBarn is also teaming up to provide some of the best deals on captive-bred fish and coral for the month of June! Our friends at ARC Reef have been working on some exciting things we can’t wait to share with our fellow hobbyists. ARC Reef developed one of our favorite products, Coralline Algae in a Bottle. They’ve also been creating new methods of improving and restoring natural coral reefs. By using a technique known as reef-seeding, ARC Reef has helped to restore coral reefs in Florida, The Bahamas, and Puerto Rico. We are also very proud to be teaming up with Biota to celebrate World Ocean Month. Biota has been developing new techniques to further the industry through sustainable aquaculture. As we speak, Biota has successfully aquacultured over 100 different species of fish. This is an amazing achievement for the reef-keeping hobby! Although there are still many wild-caught fish in the marine aquarium trade, eventually that burden will be lessened with Biota’s continued efforts. Biota has pledged that for every captive-bred fish they sell, two more will be released into the ocean in Palau. ORA is another great partner we are celebrating World Ocean Month with! Oceans, Reefs, and Aquariums (ORA) is one of the first hatcheries for captive-bred ornamental fish. They are the largest ornamental aquaculture facility in the US. ORA has always been at the forefront of conservation efforts and committed to improving captive-breeding programs. We also share the same goal of seeing reef aquariums stocked with fully aquacultured specimens! There is yet another exciting event taking place this month. June is also National Zoo and Aquarium Month! Zoos and aquariums are more than just a family attraction. Public aquariums are a window to the ocean. Zoos and aquariums provide a crucial place for animals to recover from injuries and receive rehabilitation. Zoos all around the world practice and teach animal and veterinary care. They are in fact, of critical importance for the safety and conservation of natural environments for animals. Conclusion We hope you will join us in celebrating World Ocean Month! This is a great opportunity for anyone in the hobby to learn about the work we are doing to protect the ocean and natural coral reefs. Reef keepers can also help in safeguarding the ocean by making a commitment to support sustainable aquaculture. Be sure to check back often, we have so many more festivities planned for June! Our friends at Biota, ORA, and ARC Reef are offering great deals all month. AlgaeBarn will also be rolling out some amazing discounts on our macroalgae, copepods, and phytoplankton!
Leo Yurek says June 16, 2022 at 6:05 am I am visiting the Toronto Zoo this month, have purchased Premium Live Rock from ARC and visiting the Camden, NJ aquarium. Still waiting for macroalgae and phytoplankton…it’s worth the wait for a quality product. Thank you Algaebarn, ARC and public zoo and aquariums… Reply
