Description
Raccoon Butterflyfish (Chaetodon lunula)
Chaetodon lunula – The Biota captive bred Raccoon Butterflyfish, Chaetodon lunula, is being produced at The Hawaii Pacific University – Oceanic Institute and Biota Hawaii. This is the first time Chaetodon lunula has been raised from eggs produced in captivity and offered commercially as a captive bred offering.
The Raccoon Butterflyfish is a hardy, beautiful species with a bright yellow body and a black mask. This species when wild caught may not eat when first introduced to a new aquarium but has a great appetite after acclimation. Our captive bred specimens are even hardier, better suited to aquarium life, and are raised on small pellets and other inexpensive aquarium foods; making them an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. They’ve also been known to enjoy eating pest Aiptasia anemones in aquariums, making them a valuable worker fish.
This medium-sized species reaches a max size of less than 8” in aquariums. As adults, they do best in a large fish-only aquarium with other peaceful species.

Benefits of Aquacultured Marine Livestock
Aquacultured fishes offer a huge advantage over wild-caught specimens. For example, when bred and raised under captive conditions, they adjust more easily to aquarium life. They are also much less likely to carry disease. Even more, aquacultured specimens can better tolerate shipping stress. Most notably, by purchasing aquacultured watchman gobies you support the aquaculture of marine organisms and help to make our hobby more sustainable!
