Nassarius snails are sand-sifting snails that move through and clean tank substrate, such as sand or gravel. These slow moving creatures move methodically through the sand to prevent anaerobic build-up while simultaneously consuming organic waste. When not actively foraging, they tend to remain buried in the sand bed with a long, slender siphon protruding out. Once they detect the addition of food to an aquarium, they will rapidly emerge and start racing towards the food. This can be highly amusing when a large group of these snails are kept in the aquarium. These snails devour decaying food quickly, and may require supplemental feeding once they have thoroughly cleaned the sandbed. They can be fed with algae wafers, fish food pellets, frozen brine shrimp, Can O Cyclops, Benepets, and mysis.
Benefit of Tank Raised
Tank Raised Snails provide a huge benefit over wild caught. Because they are raised in an Aquarium, they are better adapted to living in an aquarium and tend to be more disease resistant. They tend to handle the stress of shipping better. By purchasing tank bred organisms, you are helping support the aquaculture of marine organisms and helping make our hobby sustainable!
AlgaeBarn keeps these snails in an invert specific system to minimize the occurrence of hitchhikers and parasites.
